Volunteer Program Manager

Reports to: Executive Director

Organization Summary

Good Grocer was founded in 2015 with the mission of helping people who want to eat fresh, healthy foods but can’t always afford it. Good Grocer’s unique business model reduces operational costs – typically one of the largest expenses for a grocery store – by relying on volunteers to operate every aspect of the store. These savings are passed along in the form of lower food prices for all of our shoppers. Instead of giving people a hand out, Good Grocer empowers those in need by inviting them to volunteer their time and talents for a break on their bill. As of July 2016 Good Grocer has engaged 450 low-income volunteers, enabling them to purchases 195,000 essential foods – a collective savings of over $98,000. Doing good is not part of our mission, it is our mission.

Job Summary

The Volunteer Program Manager is responsible for the day today administration, management, and development of the volunteer program and staff, with a specific focus on assessing volunteer capacity and matching it to organizational needs.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Training, schedule, and supervise Volunteer Coordinator staff team of 4
  • Facilitate bi-weekly Volunteer Coordinator staff meetings
  • Effectively lead daily volunteer teams in running every aspect of the grocery store
  • Facilitate daily pre-shift meetings with team members to both disseminate information and develop a community
  • Work alongside the Executive Director to advance Good Grocer’s vision, values, and goals
  • Process volunteer applications, requests, and schedule changes
  • Cashier at checkout for guests as needed
  • Maintain a presence in the store by providing excellent customer service

Job Qualifications

  • Proven leadership with ability to motivate and manage both staff and volunteers

  • Minimum of 12 months experience in a supervisory role
  • Minimum of 12 months experience as a volunteer coordinator
  • Recent experience in grocery or retail preferred
  • Knowledge of volunteer management practices
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills
  • Effectively manage competing priorities
  • Must be reliable with the ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Service oriented individual with high energy, friendly demeanor, and a willingness to work hard
  • Demonstrate a love for relationship building and servant leadership
  • Possess a natural ability to relationally connect with a diverse group of people
  • Flexible and adaptable in both work style and environment
  • Can quickly learn new technology systems and have a high level of comfort with MS Office, Google Apps, and Mac based software
  • Passionate about helping families facing food insecurity
  • Comfortable working in a non-profit organization
  • Fluent in Spanish and English preferred

PT Volunteer Coordinator

Hours: Friday & Sunday OR Saturday & Monday (4:30pm-9:30pm)

Job Summary

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the management of all volunteer cashiers, stockers, and cleaners during the night shifts, with a specific focus on completing all the necessary tasks to close the store.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Effectively lead volunteer teams in running every aspect of the grocery store
  • Facilitate daily pre-shift meetings with team members to both disseminate information and develop a community
  • Process volunteer applications, requests, and schedule changes
  • Cashier at checkout for guests as needed
  • Maintain a presence in the store by providing excellent customer service
  • Complete the closing checklist to ensure the store is closed accurately

Job Qualifications

  • Must be available to work on Friday & Sunday from 4:30-9:30pm OR Saturday & Monday from 4:30-9:30pm
  • Proven leadership with ability to motivate and manage volunteers
  • Recent experience in grocery or retail preferred
  • Knowledge of volunteer management practices
  • Effectively manage competing priorities
  • Service oriented individual with high energy, friendly demeanor, and a willingness to work hard
  • Demonstrate a love for relationship building and servant leadership
  • Possess a natural ability to relationally connect with a diverse group of people
  • Fluent in Spanish and English OR Somali and English preferred
  • Flexible and adaptable in both work style and environment
  • Can quickly learn new technology systems and have a high level of comfort with MS Office, Google Apps, and Mac based software
